Tanikha

"My tutors have been really supportive and have helped me explore the different paths I could take."

Growing up in Enfield, Tanikha has lived in London her whole life. At first she thought about moving elsewhere to study, but when she found out more about her course she realised it was perfect for her. She was excited by the possibilities for students in a city like London, and the skills she has gained at UAL have gone far beyond theatre to encompass all kinds of creative expression.

“I studied BTEC Art and Design at college for two years before coming to UAL. I’ve also been performing my whole life and really love theatre, so when it came to choosing a course I felt that Theatre Design perfectly combined these two passions!

The project I’m working on at the moment has given me the chance to collaborate with other creators. I’m working with a choreographer at London Contemporary Dance School to create a performance at The Place, their theatre in North London. It’s been an incredible experience to see my own production come to life, and I’ve been able to put into practice all the skills I’ve learnt during my time at UAL.

I’ve been really focused on my future during my time here. I’ve started to think about job opportunities and I’m considering doing a masters in another subject to gain more skills. My tutors have been really supportive and have helped me explore the different paths I could take. My course has also given me the opportunity to meet people in the creative industry, which has been such an important first step in my career!

The best thing about studying in a place like UAL is that you’re free to work in your own way – whatever that might be for you. But there’s also so much support in place to help students with their studies, as well as events and socials that have made my university experience special. There are loads of different sports that you can take part in, along with other societies you can join or set up yourself. Just make the most of everything on offer – keep asking questions and you’ll always find answers.”
